Teeth Cleanings & Exams Eagan MN

woman smiling in dental chairPreventive dentistry is a group of services offered by Dr. Michael and the staff at Eagan Dental Care to detect early signs of tooth decay and periodontal disease. The American Dental Association recommends regular cleanings and exams to stay ahead of complications from the oral bacteria found in plaque. However, each patient has a unique smile, and so the recommended frequency of your preventive visits may change.

Typically, patients should see the dentist at least every six months. However, additional examinations may be needed if patients are prone to periodontal disease or are experiencing discomfort or other symptoms. At Eagan Dental Care, we customize your care to your unique needs. Dr. Michael will consider your dental health history and help you plan a schedule that works for you.

Investing in Your Oral Health

The good news is that preventive treatments are much less expensive than restorative dental procedures. By staying on top of your oral health now, you can actually spend less and avoid more invasive treatments down the road. Save yourself time, money, and discomfort by investing in routine dental care in our Eagan dental practice today.

If you are interested in improving your smile through preventive dentistry, schedule a consultation at Eagan Dental Care or call us at (651)-452-5511.

Our preventive services protect against:

Gingivitis and Gum Disease:

Gingivitis is a common form of periodontal disease (a disease affecting the oral tissues around your teeth). It’s distinguished by red, swollen, or tender gums around the base of your teeth. Gingivitis shouldn’t be overlooked; it’s important to have it treated sooner rather than later, as untreated gingivitis could lead to more advanced forms of infection such as periodontitis, which can cause bone, tissue, and tooth loss.

Oral Cancer:

We offer quick, non-invasive oral cancer screenings to our patients at least once a year. Whether or not patients have certain risk factors for developing oral cancer, we encourage routine screenings to provide peace of mind.

Oral bacteria grows and develops in plaque, the sticky deposits on your teeth and gums. Though proper brushing and flossing should remove most plaque, residual plaque deposits can harden into tartar. This hard, corrosive substance must be removed by a dental hygienist during routine cleanings and check-ups. In addition, Tartar and plaque can lead to tooth decay, which destroys the protective enamel covering of your teeth. To help restore important minerals found in tooth enamel, we offer concentrated fluoride treatments that take just a few minutes and can significantly reduce your chance of developing cavities.

Oral Infections:

Diagnostic x-rays and examinations by Dr. Michael can catch oral infections before they present symptoms or further damage your teeth and gums. Using x-ray images, Dr. Michael can ensure everything is functioning properly below the gum line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Electric toothbrushes are wonderful investments, especially for patients who lack dexterity. Though they are not required, they can supplement your oral healthcare routine and yield excellent results. As always, be sure to choose a product that has been ADA-accepted.

Waterpiks or water flossers are fantastic tools for removing large food particles and debris from underneath bridges, around braces, or other hard-to-reach areas. We encourage our patients to use Waterpik if they find them beneficial. However, you should never replace regular flossing with a Waterpik, as they do not remove biofilm from the teeth surfaces. Therefore, if you purchase a Waterpik, be sure to combine it with regular flossing.

When shopping for any oral health product, be sure to look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This means that the product has been tested to the highest standards and considered safe for use. We recommend choosing non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste. If you are prone to sensitivity, try a toothpaste formulated especially for sensitive teeth.

Good oral hygiene is the first defense against cavity-causing bacteria. However, there are also preventative measures you can take to reduce the risk of decay. Topical fluoride treatments help strengthen tooth enamel and address demineralization. Dental sealants are clear coatings that are applied to the teeth to shield them from bacteria. These treatments significantly reduce the risk of cavities.

The answer to this question is different for every patient. Many individuals have their teeth cleaned every six months. However, if you are predisposed to certain oral health issues, such as decay or gum disease, we may recommend more frequent visits.
