If you’ve been avoiding the dentist due to fear or anxiety, you’re not alone; it’s been estimated that nearly 30-40 million Americans put off going to the dentist because of dental anxiety! At Gentle Dental Eagan in Eagan, MN, we understand that dental appointments can be stressful for many people. Since we are passionate about ensuring our patients maintain healthy teeth and gums, we are happy to offer options for sedation dentistry to help make your next examination or procedure more relaxing. Don’t let anxiety keep you away from a healthier smile.
Sedation Dentistry for a Stress-Free Dental Visit
Sedation dentistry involves the use of stress-relieving medications which help patients relax during their visit. Though sedated, patients are still awake and can react or respond to directions if needed.
At Gentle Dental Eagan, we offer nitrous oxide sedation which is a mild to moderate sedative. Sometimes called “laughing gas,” the nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small nosepiece and gives patients a feeling of relaxation or euphoria during the length of treatment. It’s normal for patients to feel tired or “heavy” in the examination chair while nitrous oxide is in their system. Some patients also feel tingling sensations in their hands or feet. Once the treatment is finished, nitrous oxide can be completely removed from the body in just five minutes so patients can drive themselves to and from their appointment.
Sedation Dentistry Candidates
Before administering any sedatives, Dr. Michael will perform a thorough assessment and will review your health history in detail. Sedation treatment, such as nitrous oxide, may be a good fit for you if you:
- Are anxious about going to the dentist
- Are afraid of needles
- Suffer from a severe gag reflex
- Have teeth that are hyper-sensitive
- Are going through an invasive or long procedure
- Suffer from involuntary movements, such as patients with cerebral palsy or Parkinson’s disease
